Biography:
Tanis was born to a happy couple in Zora's Domain. At birth, his parents granted him the name of Olrik Sinat. Young Olrik Sinat grew up in a modest way, never wishing for more than he deserved, never belittling what he had. Olrik Sinat was always a happy child, cheering on those who found woe in their lives, though he never felt satisfied.
Around the age of 6, young Olrik Sinat and his parents set out to Lake Hylia, a trip that the young zora would always remember. He had never been outside of Zora's Domain, so his curiosity towards all that he saw made him a little reckless throughout the trip. His parents, though, were more than careful and prepared for the journey. Young Olrik, though careless, made it safely to Lake Hylia.
Young Olrik Sinat was enchanted by the beautiful lake that rested before him. He wasted little to no time in swimming about, a pleasure that few zora would turn down. This is where young Olrik's thirst for adventure began. Upon the second day of the family's trip to the lake, disaster struck at home and summoned the parents immediately. The parents, who were palace guards on leave, were forced to leave young Olrik behind.
It took the child several hours to realize that his parents had left. Olrik cried out for his parents in hopes that they were still in the area, but all his cries were in vain. The day grew old and the sun weary, ready to hand over the sky to the moon. Young Olrik searched about the lake, hoping to find his parents. Though his efforts were in vain, young Olrik found something else. Upon a well worn wall rested the family crest of Hyrule's Royal Family. This intrigued and fascinated Olrik beyond anything else he had ever come across. Olrik cleared off the dust to get a better view of crest when he discovered something else: Magic.
Being the child of palace guards, Olrik was privileged to learn how to read and write. These skills came to spark his interest in many things, but upon his trip to Lake Hylia these skills kindled a fire that would burn within his heart for years to come. Upon examining the crest Olrik discovered an aged book and that the crest marked a grave. Though he did not recognize the Hyrule Family Crest, Olrik thought it must have been important if it was marked there. He read what was left of the book and quickly learned what it was about. He hungered for the incantations that the book gave him, yet they were not enough. To his dismay, the stronger spells in the book had either been removed or had faded out. That, though, did not stop young Olrik from attempting to learn the magic.
A week nearly passed before his parents returned. Young Olrik could not wait to show his parents what he had learned while they were away. Young Olrik's parents were frightened by the dark arts that their son had learn and quickly scolded him and brought him home. That did not stop Olrik from seeking his desire. Every chance he got to go the lake, Olrik practiced his arts in secret.
A few months after, but a few trips to the lake, young Olrik was entered into guard training, where he would learn how to be a royal guard. His parents kept encouraging him to continue going to guard school, but the young zora's interests were not in hand to hand combat, but in the arts of the mage. Olrik's parents were at a loss, but then a brilliant plan hit them. One night, young Olrik's parents told him about a zora princess, though the princess was completely fictional. Olrik did not know the royal family, so he did not know who was a part of it, but he was instantly fascinated by the fake princess. The way Olrik's parents had described her would have driven any man mad with love. This brought most of Olrik's attention to his guard training, yet he still kept refining his magical skills, giving him an edge over most of the other guards-to-be.
The year that Olrik turned 15 brought a major disappointment to the young zora. Upon completing the first of three tests a guard must complete before entering the final stage of training, Olrik fell severely ill and was relieved of his guard training. The young zora was heart broken. He could no longer meet the zora princess in which he had fallen in love with. He had never met her, but the words that had described her were more than enough to drive Olrik love sick.
On the following year, Olrik decided that his training had been completed. He had not been allowed to re-enter the program, but he felt that it would do him good. On what would be his final trip to Lake Hylia as Olrik Sinat, the young zora decided to take a good friend of his.
This friend had not known about Olrik's secret training in the elemental magic, but she knew that it was part of the guard training. Olrik trusted her completely, yet she loved him. Olrik told her his tale, as well as where to find the book, and what he planned to do. He wished to search for a greater magic, something that no zora guard had ever mastered. He knew not what it was, but he no longer wished to be the frail Olrik Sinat.
"Jeanny," Olrik spoke, his voice strained with remorse, "I don't wish to leave, but this is what I must do. All I can say is that I will never return. Olrik Sinat, from now on, is no more but a mere memory."
Jeanny looked upon the face of the nameless zora. Her soft cheeks were stained with tears, here lips trembled with the sadness that filled her heart and her eyes begged the young zora in front of her to comfort her, to tell her his name.
The nameless zora embraced his life long friend. He, too, had grown fond of her, yet his feverish delusions of the zora princess never allowed him to realize whom he truly cared for. Goodbye, for now. The nameless zora thought to himself, wishing he had said it. He did not want to let her watch him leave, but he knew that she would know when he left. In the middle of the night, Tanis Half-Elven left Lake Hylia in search of a magic that would best any royal guard or anything that caught his interest. The name came from his last name being spelled backwards and derived from the author of the book, at least what Tanis could make out from the faded text.
At age 17, Tanis came across one of his favorite things to say: "Gorons eat good rocks." It was at this age, too, that he learned what the crest in Lake Hylia meant. He now knew where to go to find better magic, yet that was not the only thing that called him to the north...
