Welcome to the Hero's Fountain. It is here that we train new members and experienced members alike to better their posting skills. Roleplaying is the very core of the Realms of Hyrule. It helps to be good at it, but it's more important to enjoy doing it, and in a way that others will enjoy it, too. The entire purpose of RoH is to roleplay as a character, becoming a new person by creating their story, by narration. This is one of the advantages of a forum-based fantasy. Except for what's forbidden in the rules, you can do whatever you want, however you want it. Every aspect of your character is controlled by you. How they talk, what they look like, what they think...all of it is up to you.

So, what happens if you're new to this site, and you have no idea how role-playing works? Well, if I told you everything here, you wouldn't need training, and I'd lose my job. So, this topic is a basic guide to getting started. First off, make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules. They have a lot of information on what you can and can't do. The Instruction Manual will cover most questions. You can also check out the Official Announcements for any big updates that you should know about. It also shows the list of Moderators, or "Scribes". These people are here to help, so ask them questions if you're stuck. For anything else, you'll have a trainer to ask! But how to get training?

In order to receive training, simply send a PM (Personal Message) to Mahinui! If you don't know how to do that, here's a easy-to-follow Link! BlueHat.gif
Really. Click the Link. He's got a blue hat.

Of course, sending anyone a message is simple. Just click on their name, and head down to the link that says "send a personal message". In my case, just write a simple note requesting training. I'll send you a message once your topic is created, and that's it! Simple, yes? However, as you've all seen by now, I'm not the only trainer here. My fellow trainers will be assisting should things get busy. They're all good, trustworthy folks, so rest assured that you're in good hands no matter who the trainer is. Still, even though there's a list of them, please send the messages to me. It's not about being in charge, honest. It's just because they might not get your message as quickly, and we want to be prompt with training, so everyone gets a chance. This way things are organized and regulated.

For those who know their stuff, if you want to be one of those trainers, again, just send me a message, and we'll figure something out.

Well, that's all for now. I know it's not the best, but you can be sure I'll update it when I think of something better to say. Thanks for reading.

Trainers (It doesn't really matter who they are, but I figure it'll give those on the list a nice ego boost.)

All right, well, this is a quick...tutorial, I suppose. If you're really just looking for some instructions without the instructors, read this bit here. It's better than repeating it to everyone, right?

QUOTE
Realms of Hyrule is played by role-playing, or pretending to be someone else, thinking how they would, acting as they would, and so on. That means you are creating a character to join the land of Hyrule to have adventures, fun, whatever. The nice thing about this place is you can be pretty much anyone you like, from the name, the clothes, the memories down to their very identity. We are role-playing with others, so that means your character is interacting with other player's characters. However, this is a forum, so we interact using our posts. We tell a story using narration, and someone can join your story by posting with you. It's like writing a story, but you're living through it by reacting as time goes on. The story is never decided upon completely, and there's no guessing how things might end up. That, of course, is what makes it fun.

Now, we've all heard stories. There's a plot, characters, setting, and so on. All we want to do here in training is make sure you can post in a way that fits everyone best. That means making up a story (an interesting character, putting them in fantastic surroundings, etc.), and letting others enter your story as easily and cleanly as possible. Here is an example, though it's a very simple and brief one, okay?

The dragon guarded the old stone tower furiously, keeping the poor princess from escaping her room at the very top. She screamed for help as loud as he could, tears in her eyes. She was very pretty, and knights would come from everywhere to attempt rescuing her, but none ever succeeded. The dragon roared, daring any who would fight to come closer.

Now, this little post tells a story, gives the reader a picture in their minds, and allows someone who wanted to join the story the background information necessary to enter without missing a step. Like so:

A bold and brave knight, armor golden and shining, walked up to the dragon without hesitation. His great sword glinted in the sunlight, and his shield was mighty and tough. He had heard of this tower and its beautiful captive, and he swore he would save her, or die trying.

Make sense? Someone else made up the knight, and so they're now part of the story. These are the basics to RoH, posting and replying to posts.

There are four areas to cover when creating a post:
  • Actions- What you physically do. Walking, jumping, fighting, moving, expressing, whatever your character does.
  • Descriptions- The setting, the details, and the picutre. If walking, how did you walk? Proudly? With a limp, due to a battle? Where are you walking; through bushes, wading knee-high in a river? Describe everything.
  • Dialogue- What people say. Say a lot, but only enough to get everything across. Say it boldly for stronger meaning, say it with italics to make a point...there are a lot of ways to speak. Use the best-suited ones.
  • Thoughts- This is tricky, probably the most so. The reader wants to know how the character feels, how they decide to do what they do. However, it's easy to go off into a whole other story or tangent because there's so much going on in our heads. Memories, personalities, logicial processes...the whole deal. (It's also here that people make the mistake of knowing things they shouldn't. When I think, your character can't see that. So if I think something like, "I'm hiding my treasure in a hollow tree". you can't suddenly notice a glint in the forest. You the author know this, but you the character does not. Just keep that in mind.) Anyway, this is often the part that most people use to describe their next move or motives. It's basically narrating for yourself, to get the story going.
